Title: First Interview is Up!
Post by: mattyh on August 15, 2007, 09:09:37 AM
SwPocketModels.com is proud to release the first in a number of interviews with the minds behind Star Wars PocketModels.  This first interview is with Lead Designer Mike Elliott.  Check it out at www.swpocketmodels.com/interview1aug07.php

Use this thread to share your thoughts on the interview.  Feel free to post followup questions that come to mind so that we can try to address them in the upcoming interviews as well.  Stay tuned for more great info about the game!

We have included some of the questions that were submitted in the Community Questions thread in this interview. Some we took and altered to allow for a broader answer, but I'm sure you'll recognize at least a few in this one.

I can?t really comment on that. Also I am not that familiar with the Death Star as I have only watched the one episode with the goofy guy with the long ears. I forget his name, but he was really funny, at least meesa thinks so. And if Ethan tells you I often lie and that I have watched all the movies a zillion times, don?t believe him. I suspect he might be a spy. They are everywhere you know.

 ;D

Thank you for asking the Taun Taun / Star Destroyer Question!

I appreciate the degree to which Mr. Elliott was willing to go into the design philosophy of this game to give players an idea of how things like this are brought into being.  Explaining the broad goals and design rules of the game gives players an idea of what is to come, and that is always delightful.  Hopefully the other interviews will be just as enlightening.  :)

In general the more unusual and swingy effects tend to be uncommon and rare since you don?t want them coming up all the time in limited environments. We will have formats that restrict the number of rare/named ships and rare/holo cards in a build. We will have sealed formats where you can only play with the contents of 3 to 5 booster packs. We may also run formats where you are limited to ships and cards from a certain set or sets. In all of these, you will play quite a few commons and uncommons.

I like how he eludes to different tournament structures that Wizkids might be unveiling soon.. and I wouldn't be surprised if we see them at GenCon!

My general mantra these days is make the games simple and the strategy complex.

"A minute to learn...a lifetime to master."

I have collected classic games for many years - chess, checkers, backgammon, othello, mancala, go, and the more contemporary scrabble and monopoly just to name a few.  The single most common factor that appears to seperate the classics from the rest of the games out there is this principle of simple rules and complex strategy.  While I have no idea whether SWPM will endure the test of time and still be played decades or even centuries from now, it's nice to see the designers have a solid understanding of the significance of this factor.

Overall, great interview!

Because it is an open ended system, we can basically layer elements on top of the game system and can ramp up the complexity a little bit as the game goes on. I can?t really comment on elements we left out since some of them may appear in later sets and again, spies, everywhere.

Hmm, does this then mean that Ground Assault will have a few more rules (other than those covering ground and space interaction), adding to this complexity? It will be interesting to see what other rules may or will be added by the second or third expansion.

We will do cards that reward you for playing a faction deck, but we will also do cards that punish you for playing faction decks, just as we do cards such as Obiwan that are designed to be an answer to strong droid decks.

!!! How they taunt with vague references to one of the hottest debates to hit this game!

Note, I take this as evidence that Obi-Wan should be able to override Assassin Droid!  :-* ;)
