Real Tricorders - Open source!
« on: April 15, 2012, 01:49:28 AM »
Not sure where to put this one. It's Star Trek, but real working scanning instruments. Remember the Tricorder that came out quite a long while ago from some company in Australia? That one ran about 300 USD I think, but it was limited in what it could do and used buttons to activate its functions.

The designer of these tricorders is making them as fully functional as he can get them with room to be modular in functionality. Additionally, these use touchpads which allows the interface to change with function needs.

On top of that, the developer (he has a Ph.D., by the way) is making everything he puts together freely available on his website along with the source code. He encourages others to improve on the design and add other ideas to the project:

Parts and everything run up to about a minimum of $300, still. But with a better looking piece of equipment in the end that you put together yourself.
